Parents, we need to talk. |
|
About battling our culture, focusing on our families, parenting with logic.
We are fathers and mothers, stepparents and grandparents, teachers and coaches and mentors. We are on the front lines, every day. We have a wealth of experience. And a whole lot of questions. This is where we talk. Exchange ideas. Ask for advice. Or dole it out.

At a recent town hall meeting in Texas, Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston, was listening as a woman described her opinion about the current health care legislation. When a booming voice from the back shouted “Bull S……!”, Congressman Culberson’s response was swift and angry: “Whoa! Whoa! Sir, stop! No, no, no. No, Sir! … First of all, we never use such language to a lady… It’s not appropriate…”.
How refreshing. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard anyone criticize another person for swearing. It’s been an even longer time since I’ve heard a man tell another to not talk like that in front of a woman.
Thank you, Congressman Culberson. As a woman, I feel honored.

No Goal, No Dinner
Harsh, I know. But, this is serious. These kids are eight years old. They’re not getting any younger. If they’re going to earn college scholarships, they need to be playing soccer 24-7. Geez, they get out on the field and goof around like it’s recreation or something!
Ok, this sounds a bit drastic. But, honestly, I don’t think it’s too far from the truth in some homes. We’ve all seen it. Parents coaching from the bleachers and screaming from the sidelines. Have these parents have ever played a sport themselves? At swim meets, they shout “kick harder” at swimmers whose ears are, thankfully, under water. At soccer games they scream “don’t be afraid of the ball” but, had they ever been struck by one of those things, they too would be afraid of the ball. They expect their kids to hit harder in football and jump higher in volleyball and pitch nothing but strikes on the baseball field.

Houston Independent School District is considering a revision to the Code of Conduct. The revision, which prohibits sexting, could never have been anticipated when the Code of Conduct was written.
School districts across the county have tried various methods to keep cell phone use out of the schools. Cell phones have been used by students for cheating on tests, spreading gossip, recording teacher’s words out of context, and sexting, or sending risqué photos via cell phone.

The problem with kids’ movies is, they just aren’t for kids. Oh, sure, there are G rated movies out there. And PG rated movies. But are PG-13 movies really for kids? The PG-13 rating is supposed to mean that parents should determine whether their children under age 13 should view the movie. Apparently, the Rating Board of the Motion Picture Association of America thinks PG-13 movies are just swell for kids who are 13 and older. (See the definitions of the different ratings at http://www.mpaa.org/flmrat_ratings.asp). The problem is that some of those PG-13 movies just barely missed being rated R.
