While many people are trying to guarantee their children’s success, I am setting them up for failure. Having tired of the misery of dining out with children, I decided to use that old standby, The Threat. “If you don’t sit and eat your dinner, we’re leaving”. The truth, however, was that we were not leaving under any circumstances. We had ordered, we were hungry, and we were going to have to pay whether we stayed or left. We were not leaving. And the children knew that. So, I am setting my children up for failure. Next week, we are going to McDonalds. The new one in town with the awesome play area. I will warn the children that if they don’t behave, we will leave. They, I am certain, will not behave. And this time we will leave. I will toss those Happy Meals in the trash right before their very eyes. Two or three trips to McDonalds should do the trick. Twenty dollars in the trash. But the next time I use The Threat, I think they’ll believe me.
